Cristi Caldwell is a new author to me, and I'm seriously impressed with these novels.The leads have real depth & complexity, yet maintain an honesty of character which really holds your attention and draws you into their worlds.
I wavered between wondering how each novel would conclude, then how long I was going to need to find out, then back to what the next twist setting my teeth on edge would be, then realising the hopelessness of getting to sleep before the final, final ending was uncovered and blocking out the world til I was done!
The characters maintain good flow between the books, and there is excellent historical attention to detail. My single gripe is the occasional use of the word "great" as used by a character to indicate frustrated sarcasm.
There were almost no typos or grammar problems, which is a real blessing in novels of these lengths - my thanks to the excellent proof-readers.
If you want to know the plots, read another review. My review is for the author's skill and deft touch with a popular historical period and genre. I have grown up with Georgette Heyer as my literary idol, and she's always perfect at balancing wit, plot, romance, intrigue, and humanity with historical accuracy, intelligence and flair. These novels are excellent in all of the above areas, so I believe if you enjoy an exceedingly well-crafted novel of the quality of Ms Heyer, then delve in!
Please note these novels do have scenes of a consensual and explicit nature, but they are really well written too & add an extra layer.
I can only hope Ms Caldwell has as lengthy a career of quality authoring ahead of her as Ms Heyer did. Great read, just buy it!

Forever Betrothed, Never the Bride 5 Stars
Emmaline and Drake have been betrothed for 15 years. Wanting to get away from a life that has been planned for him, Drake enlists in the army. While he is away, Emmaline dreams (and writes letters she doesn't send) of her betrothed and patiently awaits his return. Except Drake comes back emotionally scarred from war (PTSD) and wants to continue to ignore his responsibilities. Emmaline is tired of waiting for Drake to remember she exists, so with the help of Drake's best friend, Sinclair, she decides to be everywhere that he is.... Balls, the opera, etc. I laughed a lot while reading this lovely story and I also cried a lot too. Drake was so broken when he came back from the war, and Emmaline's goodness literally saves him from a world of darkness. I really love this heroine. She was so tenaciously steadfast in her love for Drake. He honestly did not stand a chance.
Christi Caldwell is a fantastic author and this is a great start to the Scandalous Season Series. This is the second time I read this book and I think I cried harder this time than the first. BTW, Jones gets his own story in Seduced by a Lady's Heart.... and it's GOOOOOOD!!!
Never Courted, Suddenly Wed 5 Stars
Okay, I'm wiping tears as I write this review. What a beautiful story. I have concluded that each hero that Christi Caldwell writes about, I'm going to want to give them a great big hug. Omg I wanted to punch Christopher's father in the face. What an absolute terror he was to his son.... I won't give away any spoilers. Anywho, Christopher and Sophie have known each other all their lives... But they've never fully understood each other. In fact, it seems that they've always misunderstood each other's motives and actions. So they have done their best to ignore each other. But Christopher's jerk of a father tells him that they are financially ruined and he has to marry Sophie to get to her dowry. He wants Christopher to do whatever it takes... Even if it means compromising her. But Christopher refuses and comes up with a scheme to take him out of the running for Sophie's hand. So Christopher enlists the help of his best friend, the Duke of Mallen, to pretend to court her.... but suddenly the duke isn't pretending. Christopher's jealous actions were fun to watch. Of course Sophie is confused that now these two gents seem to be paying attention to her... A wallflower. And the one that's causing her heart to flutter is the man she has always thought intensely disliked her. I'm going to stop there because I don't want to give anything away. But let's just say that Christopher and Sophie's HEA was one emotional roller coaster ride. I was screaming "yaaaay" one minute... then "Oh Noooooo!" the next. But totally cheered for these two, because they certainly had a lot to overcome. Awesome read!!!!

Dangit!! I'm just gonna carry a box Kleenex every time I know I'll be reading a Christi Caldwell story. The last few chapters were a blur as I read each word with tears pouring from my eyes. Omigosh.... I absolutely love Abigail and Geoffrey. What awesome characters. I was biting my nails the whole time to see if they would make it to HEA. Geoffrey is very stiff and proper.... Very British. Abigail is none of those things, but Geoffrey is very much drawn to her. Geoffrey finds himself coming out of his stuffy shell, throws propriety to the wind, and decides to take a chance on Abigail.... but Abigail has a secret that will threaten his newfound love for her. Just when you think your heart can't take any more with this book... Another wrench is thrown in their turmoil!! Whaaaaaaaa!!!! I cried buckets, I tell ya!! Omigosh... I la-la-loved this story!!
Now I just bought the rest of the books in the series!! I can not wait to fall in love with more of Christi Caldwell's characters. And yes, I have my box of Kleenex ready. Christi Caldwell is now firmly placed on my keep shelf!! She is awesome!!
This is a three book bundle of Christi Caldwell's Scandalous Season Books. When it comes to happily ever after romances that are full of heart, teary eyed moments and love, Caldwell is on par with romance writers BALOGH, JAMES, HOYT, BARTON, DARE, DALTON and CAMPBELL. She writes female heroines who are believable and heroes that maybe flawed, but become better men for the woman they love. If you haven't read a Caldwell book then this bundle is a fabulous value. Once you dip your toes into Caldwell's Regency England, you won't want to leave.
This is a boxed set of three Regency Romance novels by Christi Caldwell. They are OK stories but they seem to be rather formulaic. It is the same story over and over with different characters and some variety in the subplots, but the author uses the same phrases over and over in each book. Some of the phrases are a little irritating like when a man puts his hands together in a steeple and rests his chin on it. How can that be comfortable? And all the descriptions of the heroes all sound the same, maybe different eye and hair color but the same physical descriptions; and they always "fill a doorway" or a room, or make a carriage crowded. What is the deal with all these really big men? This would probably not be a problem if each book was read separately over time, but by being in a boxed set it gets redundant.
It was really hard to feel sympathetic for the hero of the third book because he was so cruel in the previous book. The love of the h was really hard to believe, and the H's mother needed to be shipped off to her own house--she was horrid. There was too much unnecessary guilt motivating the characters. Someone dies due to natural causes and a character ruins their life due to their guilt; not very emotionally healthy people.
I confess, I'm one of those prudes who doesn't feel comfortable with explicit sex scenes and there are so many it gets irritating. They are pretty much all the same, too. I think it is fine to leave a little to the imagination.
