Soul Directive Michael Cantwell 9780615838359 Books Reviews

**I received this book from the author and Paranormal Romance & Authors That Rock in exchange for an honest review.**

3.5 Stars
After the way book 1 ended I wasn't sure what to expect going into this one. I'll admit that I wasn't chomping at the bit, and well, this one didn't really grab my attention until mid-way through the book. However, once I did hit that midway point, things really started to get interesting...and intriguing because by then, I realized I really had no idea what was really going on nor who to trust. And by the end, I have to say that I was definitely interested in reading the next book.

The story picks up where book 1 ended. Caeles' family has been frozen by Elder Orcus and Caeles has taken his soul. With the taking of Orcus' soul, this has opened up a spot on the council and of course, they asked Caeles to step in. And although as a child, he did aspire to be on the council some day, this was not that day. His only thought was how to save his family, but the council has other ideas. Even though they wanted him to be the new leader, they were not as forthcoming as you would expect. And yet, they expected him to solve all of their current issues, including the fact that they did not have enough soul stealers to sustain their people.

From this point on, Caeles is not only challenged with finding a cure for his family, because of course none of the other council members know how to reverse the effects, he also needs to learn how to lead the council, become knowledgeable on their current issues, determine why they had a drastic decline in soul stealers, and continue to steal souls since he is technically the master soul stealer and they need every able body they can get. As he seeks a cure for his family, he'll find himself in situations he never expected, doing things he isn't even sure is smart, and stealing souls along the way. Which means we'll get those interesting stories behind why the victims are losing their souls, or why they shouldn't as the case may be for some of them. It's amazing how much he'll travel from one place to another, and vice versa, multiple times with no thoughts to the cost or potential danger to himself. I think in part, my issue with this series and the reason I struggle to rate it higher is because, well, he just doesn't come across as that bright and the fact that he shares so much of his people's secret with non-stealers which I would expect is taboo with little to no consequence is frankly, unbelievable. Now, the author does do a credible job at the end to justify some of this, but still. The other thing is, well, half of these characters are not even likeable. I feel for Caeles, but at times I also cannot relate to any of them.

What redeemed this for me? At times I was confused, and although I enjoyed reading the history behind the stolen souls, I wasn't always sure where they fit in or if they were just filler. But then the secrets started to pile up, and the characters waffled between being the good guys and the bad guys...until I wasn't sure who was telling the truth and exactly what was the truth, any more than poor Caeles. At this point, I started to feel for Caeles, while at the same time I just wondered if he was always going to be manipulated by everyone around him without learning what the deal is with the council, Elder Orcus, their lack of soul stealers, and his family's welfare. I definitely did not see where this would end, and by then, I was hooked and chomping to read the next book.

I still don't think this book will appeal to all readers. The writing style still seems a little off, but at least consistent with the first book. At least that is my opinion, but then again, I don't always like what others love and vice versa.
This was a great read and I would recommend this book to anyone at any age. I like how the writer draws you in and totally holds your interest.
